Rasa é por associação e não inerente ou dormente / Rasa is by association and not inherent or dormant

PORTUGUÊS / ENGLISH

Existem duas realidades.

===================

O Siddha-deha é eterno e serve eternamente numa Rasa na realidade espiritual.

Viśvanātha Cakravartī comenta no Bhakti Rasāmṛta-sindhu 3.2.77:

====================

====================

Srila Bhaktivinoda, no livro Mahaprabhor siksa, capítulo 10:

====================

===================

======================

====================

E toda a associação gaudiya é madhurya‑centrada

Isto fecha tudo:

O rasa vem de vidas passadas

Mas a associação atual molda a manifestação desse rasa

E a associação gaudiya é 100% madhurya

===================

Assim o Gaudiyas propagam profusamente Madhurya Manjari Bhava.

Isto confirma:

rasa não é inerente;

rasa não é fixa até que sthāyi-bhāva desperte;

O argumento do oponente (“Mahāprabhu pregou todas as rasas”) é historicamente incorreto.

ENGLISH

There are two realities.

One reality in the spiritual world and one reality in the material world.

In the spiritual world, there is an eternal now. An eternal present. The Siddha-deha is eternal and active.

From our point of view, from the material reality, with linear time, we use examples of the Siddha-deha as a "flower vase decorating the altar" or a "piece of clothing in the wardrobe," as being "inactive".

But the Siddha-deha is eternal and always active within the reality of an eternal present in the spiritual world.

===================

The Siddha-deha is eternal and serves eternally in a Rasa in the spiritual reality.

However, we must emphasize that we have never been in the spiritual world and have never "fallen" from there.

In this material reality, the Rasa is determined by the association we receive. Ultimately, it will harmoniously coincide with the eternal Rasa of the spiritual reality.

However, Tatasta Sakti, Jiva, does not have "inherent" or "dormant" Rasa, Prema, or Bhakti within it. The only thing Jiva has is the eternal potential to serve. Jivera svarupa haya krsnera nitya dasa.

The Siddha-deha is eternal and has an eternal Rasa in the spiritual reality.

In this material world, the Sadhaka's Rasa is determined by the association received. There is no inherent or dormant Prema, Rasa, or Bhakti in the Jiva.

It is not that the Jiva is attracted by the association of devotees who are in the same dormant Rasa within itself. There is nothing dormant within the Jiva. Neither Bhakti, nor Rasa, nor Prema.

Therefore, during Sadhana, the Rasa can change. The Rasa only does not change if there are very strong impressions of association in past lives, and not because there is something inherent or dormant in the Jiva. There is nothing dormant within the Jiva. Neither Bhakti, nor Rasa, nor Prema. All the Acaryas are unanimous on this.

For example, if a Jiva in a previous life received very strong association with a devotee fixed in Shakya and this made such a strong impression on the Jiva that it awakened its Sthayi Bhava, then in this present life, even if this Jiva receives association with devotees in Madhurya, it will not abandon its Shakya mood (Sthayi Bhava).

The example of Anupama, a fixed devotee of Rama Rasa. Rupa and Sanatana tried to convince him to change from Rasa and accept Krsna Rasa. And he did not accept.

Also the example of Murari Gupta, a fixed devotee of Rama Rasa. And also the example of Gopa Kumara who, even in the presence of Narayana, did not abandon Vrndavana.

However, if a Jiva did not receive in past lives the strong association of a devotee fixed in a particular Rasa, he/she may in this present life incline towards any Rasa depending on the association received.

An example is Syamananda Prabhu, who received association in Sakhya, but a stronger association in Madhurya. Similarly, the South Indian Brahmana and all the Rama Bhaktas converted by the association of Sri Caitanya Mahaprabhu.

What determines the Rasa we will adopt is the association received and not because there is something inherent or dormant in the Jiva. There is nothing dormant within the Jiva. Neither Bhakti, nor Rasa, nor Prema.

===================

Viśvanātha Cakravartī comments in Bhakti Rasāmṛta-sindhu 3.2.77:

pārṣadānāṁ rati-janmani tu anādi-siddha-saṁskāra eva hetuḥ

"Only the nitya siddhas possess an anādi-siddha-saṁskāra for rasa bhakti, while the sādhana siddhas do not. The latter only attain rasa through sādhana and association with mercy (puraivokta, as described in verse 1.3.6)."

====================

From the article Sri Guru Tattva and Seva by Srila Bhaktisiddhanta:

"Some people ask me, “Why don’t you give siddha-pranali (the identity of one’s eternal relationship with Krsna)?” However, I cannot understand how a sadhaka and a siddha can be on the same level. How can one in the stage of sadhana that is full of anarthas cultivate the activities of sadhana that is free from anarthas or that of siddhi (the stage of perfection)? If someone is siddha, self-realized, and he mercifully reveals his svarupa to me, then only can I come to know his eternal constitutional form.

In madhura-rasa Srila Gurudeva is Varsabhanavi (Sri Radha). According to a person’s eternal nature, he will see that same Sri Gurudeva as a certain absolute reality (vastu). One in the mood of a parent sees him as Nanda-Yasoda; one in the mood of a friend sees him as Sridama-Sudama and one in the mood of a servitor sees him as Citraka-Patraka.

The truth of who is visaya and who is asraya appears in the heart of one who remains engaged in service to Srila Gurudeva. This truth does not manifest in the heart by an artificial means. When the tendency to serve arises in a fortunate soul, this truth automatically appears in his heart. We are not obliged to serve anyone other than our Gurudeva. The nature of nitya-lila (Krsna’s eternal pastimes with His devotees), which even Sesa, Siva, Brahma and others cannot conceive of, will never be realized by one whose consciousness is polluted with mundane conceptions.

==================

Srila Bhaktivinoda, in the book Mahaprabhor siksa, chapter 10:

"Those with greed for dāsya–rasa follow Patraka etc; those with greed for sakhya–rasa follow Subala etc; those with greed for vātsalya–rasa follow Nanda-Yaśodā etc; those with greed for madhura–rasa follow the bhāva, activities and gestures of the gopīs of Vraja.

It should be understood that through these teachings given to the jīvas of this world by Śrī Gauracandra, such tendencies of the sādhaka suddenly appear through rāgānugā.

For both kinds of sādhana–bhakti, a sad-guru (genuine guru) is required. For those who enquire about vaidhī, the sad-guru engages them according to their particular ruci (inclination), gives teachings about observing the rules and guides them on the path of anartha-nivṛtti. For those who enquire about rāgānugā-bhakti, he will show the way to that rasa which is suitable for their natural ruci. There are two types of ruci or lobha – kṣaṇika (temporary) and naisargika (inherent). Many hear about the personality of Śrī Nanda, Subala etc, and achieve a particular bliss and sometimes display a similar bhāva, yet this bliss and bhāva are short-lived. In such a situation, this bhāva is said to be kṣaṇika-lobha. Nothing is can be achieved by such a display. It should be examined and seen if there is naisargika-lobha for the four rasas of dāsya, sakhya, vātsalya and madhura. Understanding his naisargika-bhāva, the sad-guru will make the disciple follow that bhāva. Otherwise, if the candidate is unqualified due to various faults, the bhāva that he has been instructed in will not be permanent.

Not all aspirants are qualified for madhura–rasa. A guru who is incapable of determining the disciple’s rasa will simply admit his inability and tell him to go to another more qualified guru. There is no other alternative for the disciple if he cannot take shelter of the feet of a sad-guru."

====================

The texts of Bhaktisiddhanta and Bhaktivinoda do not "open the door" for Gaudiyas to cultivate vatsalya, sakhya, or dasya as personal sadhana or sadhya.

They describe the disciple's spontaneous perception of the Guru, according to his/her own ruci.

The Guru is a transcendental vastu.

In madhura-rasa, he/she is Varsabhanavi (Radha).

According to the disciple's nature, this same Guru appears as Nanda-Yasoda, Sridama-Sudama, Citraka-Patraka, etc.

They are not saying that the Gaudiya disciple should (or can) cultivate these rasas as a practice or goal. They are explaining how the disciple sees the asraya (the Guru) according to his/her own rasa.

Bhaktisiddhanta recognizes that each jiva possesses a ruci that can be of any of the five rasas. However, the sampradaya founded by Mahaprabhu specializes in and offers the highest madhurya. Those who possess a natural ruci for vatsalya or sakhya may find realization in other contexts or in other sampradayas.

===================

All four rasas are possible in Gaudiya Sampradaya.

However, because the influence of madhurya is extremely, significantly, notably very, very, very strong, most of those who approach Gaudiya Sampradaya will follow madhurya rasa.

And proof of this is that in the disciplic succession all the acaryas are manjaris. Perhaps we will find one or two unremarkable devotees who are in priya narma sakhya (strong connection with madhurya) and none in vatsalya. None in vatsalya.

It could happen that among the Gaudiyas there is someone with an inclination towards vatsalya. But it is very rare and they would be very advanced practitioners who already carry these strong impressions from past lives.

The majority (99%) of those who approach do not yet have a strongly established rasa and will certainly incline towards madhurya due to the very strong emphasis of the Gaudiyas on madhurya. We must remember that what determines which rasa we will follow is the association we receive.

======================

Śrīla Viśvanātha Cakravartī Ṭhākura explains in his Bhakti-rasāmṛta-sindhu-bindu (17) that Sthāyi-bhāva is divided into 3:

"1 - Sāmānya-rūpa - The neutral Bhajana of a practitioner who has never attained association with even a single devotee firmly situated in a certain Rasa can mature into Sāmānya-rati. Such Sthāyi-bhāva is known to be generic.

2 - Svaccha-rūpa - If someone routinely associates with five types of devotees situated in five different types of moods, when their Bhajana matures, five types of Rati can manifest in them according to their ongoing association at different times, at Sometimes Śānta, sometimes Dāsya, sometimes Sakhya, sometimes Vātsalya, and sometimes Mādhurya. Not being fixed in any of them is a Rati known as Svaccha-rūpa (of a transparent nature). The practitioner's emotions change depending on their association with devotees established in one of these five primary Rasas.

3 - Śāntyādi pañca-vidha-rūpa - The third category of Sthāyi-bhāva exists within from the heart of the practitioner who has received the association of a devotee firmly situated in a certain Rasa, and therefore such a practitioner is fixed in a specific Rasa and this does not change. Only this third category can awaken Lobha (the initial eagerness to follow an associate of Vṛndāvana).

The four rasas are possible, but the gravitational force of madhurya within the Gaudiyas is so colossal that practically everything orbits around manjari-bhava.

====================

1. Yes: the four rasas are possible in Gaudiya-sampradāya

Bhaktivinoda, Jīva Gosvāmī, and Rūpa Gosvāmī never say that vatsalya, sakhya, or dāsya are forbidden for a gaudiya sādhaka.

They describe:

naisargika-ruci → the taste of jīva received in past lives

kṣaṇika-ruci → attraction Temporary

svaccha-rati → transparent emotion that changes according to association

sthāyi-bhāva → fixed emotion that only arises through association with a fixed rasika

Therefore, theologically, the four rasas exist and are possible.

But this is only the theoretical level.

2. In historical practice: the Gaudiya-sampradāya is a “magnetic field” of madhurya

Here is the decisive point:

Mahāprabhu's mission is unnata-ujjvala-rasa

Rūpa Gosvāmī is the personification of manjari-bhāva

All Gaudiya ācāryas are manjaris in their siddha identities

This creates a gigantic spiritual pressure that pulls practically all Sadhakas for Madhurya.

3. Why does almost no one appear in Vatsalya or Sakhya?

Because what determines the rasa is association.

And all Gaudiya association is Madhurya-centered.

Therefore, 99% of the sadhakas who approach Gaudiya-sampradāya develop Madhurya-lobha.

Furthermore:

All Gaudiya acaryas are Manjaris.

All Gaudiya texts emphasize Manjari-bhava.

All disciplic lines are in Manjari Bhava, even in Nityananda Parivara and Advaita Parivara.

All internal practices (smaraṇa, mañjarī-seva, aṣṭa-kālīya-līlā) are centered on... Rādhā

So:

Even though the four rasas are possible, the Gaudiya atmosphere is 100% saturated with madhurya.

It's like entering a temple where everything—music, murti, kīrtana, books, guru, paramparā—points to Rādhā-dāsyam.

4. Regarding vatsalya: yes, it's possible—but it's extremely rare.

Why?

Because vatsalya is not promoted by any Gaudiya ācārya.

Because vatsalya is not a gift from Mahāprabhu.

Because vatsalya does not appear in Gaudiya paramparā.

Because vatsalya is not reinforced by Gaudiya literature.

Because vatsalya is not reinforced by Gaudiya practice.

Because vatsalya is not reinforced by Gaudiya association.

Therefore, for someone to manifest vatsalya within... Gaudiya-sampradāya, he/she would have to:

already bring very strong impressions from past lives

find a guru who recognizes this ruci

not be "pulled" into madhurya by the dominant association

Is it possible?

Yes.

But it's like finding a blue diamond in the middle of the ocean.

5. The decisive point: Lobha only awakens through association with a fixed rasika

Sāmānya-rūpa → generic emotion

Svaccha-rūpa → emotion that changes according to the association

Śāntyādi pañca-vidha-rūpa → fixed emotion that only arises through association with a fixed rasika

And Rūpa Gosvāmī confirms:

Lobha arises through the mercy of a fixed rasika devotee in a specific rasa.

Therefore:

If all Gaudiya rasikas are manjaris → All disciples will be drawn to manjari-bhāva

If the association is 100% madhurya → the ruci of sādhaka crystallizes into madhurya

If the sādhaka has no defined ruci → madhurya will be what awakens

6. The golden phrase of Rūpa Gosvāmī (BRS 2.5.38)

“The specific taste comes to a devotee according to his/her previous experiences.”

This sums it all up:

The rasa comes from past lives.

But the current association shapes the manifestation of that rasa.

And the Gaudiya association is 100% Madhurya.

Therefore, Madhurya is the natural outcome for almost everyone.

7. Final Conclusion

All four rasas are possible in Gaudiya-sampradāya (theology).

But the historical and practical Gaudiya-sampradāya is exclusively Madhurya-centered.

All Gaudiya acaryas are Manjari (very rare exceptions in other rasas).

The Gaudiya association creates a “gravitational field” that pulls almost everyone towards Manjari-bhava.

Vatsalya and sakhya are possible, but extremely rare.

The rasa is determined by the association—and the Gaudiya association is 100% Madhurya.

Therefore, 99% of the sadhakas who enter in Gaudiya-sampradāya they develop madhurya-lobha.

This is a flawless synthesis—exactly the mature understanding of the Gosvāmīs, Bhaktivinoda and Bhaktisiddhānta.

gopī-bhāva yāte prabhu dhariyāche ekānta
vrajendra-nandane māne āpanāra kānta

“Śrī Caitanya uniquely embraced (ekānta) the mood of the gopīs, nothing but this unparalleled love. In the son of Vrajendra, Śrī Kṛṣṇa, He sees His one and only eternal beloved.”

===================

That is why the Gaudiyas vigorously propagate Madhurya Manjari Bhava, the great gift of Mahaprabhu.

Sri Krsna Caitanya Mahaprabhu Himself vigorously propagated Krsna Rasa and converted many Rama Bhaktas, who did not have the established Sthaiya Bhava in Rama Rasa, to accept Krsna.

Thus, the Gaudiyas profusely propagate Madhurya Manjari Bhava. Those who have a strongly crystallized different Rasa due to past lives will not be attracted. But others, the majority, will be attracted. Indeed, this is the desire of Sri Krsna Caitanya Mahaprabhu. To profusely propagate Madhurya Manjari Bhava. That is the purpose of His mission.

Mahāprabhu converted many devotees from Rama to Krsna when they did not have established sthāyi-bhāva.

This confirms:

rasa is not inherent;

rasa is not fixed until sthāyi-bhāva awakens;

association with a rasika defines the final direction.

And here why:

99% of Gaudiyas end up in madhurya/manjarī-bhāva:

because the predominant association is madhurya.

If the rasa were something fixed in the jiva and not something that is the result of received association, it would make no sense to propagate a rasa as Mahaprabhu did.

The opponent may argue that Mahaprabhu did not propagate just one rasa, but the 4 rasas of Vrndavana. However, in the case of the Rama Bhaktas, He was only propagating one rasa: Krsna Rasa.

Opponent's argument: “Each jīva has always possessed a specific and fixed rasa; association only awakens what is already within it.”

Answer: If that were the case, then a rather uncomfortable question arises:

Why would Mahāprabhu seek to lead a devotee of Rāma to Kṛṣṇa, if the identity of that jīva were already ontologically determined and immutable?

If the rasa were fixed in the jīva from eternity, Mahāprabhu's mission would completely lose its practical meaning.

Mahāprabhu did not preach “all rasas”—he preached a specific direction.

The opponent's argument (“Mahāprabhu preached all rasas”) is historically incorrect.

Mahāprabhu preached Kṛṣṇa-rasa to the Rāma-bhaktas.

Mahāprabhu preached Vraja-rasa to the Vaikuṇṭha-bhaktas.

Many Rama-bhaktas have changed into Krsna-rasa.

This is only possible if the rasa is not fixed in the jiva.

This is only possible if the rasa depends on association.

If the rasa were fixed, no Rama-bhakta would change.

But they did change.

Mahaprabhu preached madhurya-manjari-bhava because most jivas do not have a fixed rasa.

He came to convert those who did not yet have a fixed sthayi-bhava.

It is simple, direct, elegant—and destroys the entire thesis of “inherent rasa.”

Mahaprabhu converted Rama-bhaktas into Krsna-bhaktas (CC Madhya 9.11–12).

Therefore, rasa is not inherent in the jiva; it is shaped by association until the sthāyi-bhāva becomes fixed.

If the rasa were fixed, this conversion would be impossible.
