It's all a matter of what local leadership prioritizes and promotes.
There are leaders who consider that going out on the streets with dothi, kurta, sari to distribute books gives a bad impression.
In addition to this, in places that have a strong and wealthy Indian congregation that supports and pays all the bills, the distribution of printed books, harinama and prasada are neglected.
It's a more domestic thing. The few people who show up come because they saw it online. And in fact, in these places, in the USA for example, you go to a Sunday feast, and it's only Indian.
Here in Portugal it's already like that. Most are just Indians. That is good. The Indian community is very participative. But Prabhupada's idea was to spread awareness to the people of the country.
In places where there is no strong Indian community, other means are found. A restaurant and an inn. Okay, the bills are paid and there is some accommodation.
Going out on the streets becomes something sporadic. Once a year at a Ratha Yatra festival. Even because such leaders consider it a "bad image" to go out on the streets every day.

In places where the leadership encourages going out and distributing books, prasada and harinama continue to be distributed widely.
Printed books have not ended and will not end with the internet.
There is no comparison between reading a printed book and reading it online. Online is terrible.
Countries that had abolished printed school materials started printing again, because students learned much less through the internet alone.
So printed books are not outdated. No way.

So we have the South Brazil Yatra, we have the Atlanta temple where devotees go out every day, and a devotee with dothi and kurta distributes about 5,000 five thousand books a day.
We have devotees from New York who do Bhajana and Sankirtana every day in the Subway. They distribute many books.
Again, it's all about what leadership encourages and promotes.

It has to be all together.
Strong congregation is great. Restaurant is great. Inn is great. Spreading the word online is great. Courses and Educational Centers are great. Distributing it on the streets is great.
In India they do all this. Restaurant, congregation, inn, study center for devotees, internet and massive distribution of printed books on the streets.
India has been leading book distribution for many years. There were 7 MILLION books distributed in 2023. USA in second with 800 THOUSAND. A huge difference.
So it all has to be together.
The rest is all whining !!!

Yes, try to get close to good people, students. It is important.
But this does not mean that the "madmen and beggars" should be forgotten. There are several people who were in this situation and today are great devotees. I know someone who lived in a cave and is now a great speaker at Iskcon. And there are many cases like that.
The Movement is for everyone and not just for an elite.
Prabhupada's disciples were all drug addicts and crazy people. And today they are Gurus.

Há líderes que consideram que sair nas ruas com dothi, kurta, sari para distribuir livros causa má impressão.
Aliado a isso, em locais que têm uma congregação indiana forte e rica que sustenta e paga todas as contas, a distribuição de livros impressos, harinama e prasada são negligenciados.
Fica uma coisa mais doméstica. As poucas pessoas que aparecem vêm porque viram pela internet. E de facto, nestes locais, nos EUA por exemplo, você vai a uma festa de domingo, e é só indiano.
Aqui em Portugal já está assim. A maioria é só indiano. Isso é bom. A comunidade indiana é muito participativa. Mas a ideia de Prabhupada era divulgar para as pessoas do país.
Nos locais onde não há uma comunidade indiana forte, arranjam-se outros meios. Um restaurante e uma pousada. Pronto, as contas ficam pagas e há uma certa acomodação.
Sair as ruas passa ser algo esporadico. Uma vez por ano num festival ratha yatra. Mesmo porque tais lideres consideram uma "queimação" sair nas ruas todos os dias.

Não existe comparação em ler um livro impresso e ler pela net. Pela net é terrivel.
Países que tinham abolido o material escolar impresso, voltaram a imprimir, porque somente pela net os alunos aprendiam muito menos.
Então livros impressos não é algo ultrapassado. De forma alguma.

Congregação forte é ótimo. Restaurante é ótimo. Pousada é ótimo. Divulgar pela net é ótimo. Cursos e Centros Educativos é ótimo. Distribuir nas ruas é ótimo.
Na Índia eles fazem tudo isso. Restaurante, congregação, pousada, centro de estudos para os devotos, net e distribuição massiva de livros impressos nas ruas.
A Índia há já muitos anos lidera a distribuição disparada. Foram 7 MILHÕES de livros distribuidos em 2023. EUA em segundo com 800 MIL. Uma enorme diferença.
Então tem que ser tudo junto.

Sim, tentar se aproximar de pessoas de bom nível, estudantes. É importante.
Mas isto não quer dizer que os "loucos e mendigos" devam ser esquecidos. Tem várias pessoas que estavam nesta situação e hoje são grandes devotos.
Eu conheço um que vivia numa caverna e hoje é um grande orador na Iskcon. E há muitos casos assim.
O Movimento é para todos e não só para uma elite.
Os discípulos de Prabhupada eram todos drogados e malucos. E hoje são Gurus.

Do temples in the USA go out to invite local people born in the USA to the Temple programs? Is there a distribution of books in these Temples?
I remember 45 years ago, we went out during the week to distribute books and invite people and so the Sunday Feasts were always full of local people and not just Indians.
If devotees don't go out to distribute books and invite locals to go to the Temple, there will only be Indians due to the large Indian diaspora around the world. Here in Portugal it's the same thing. Only Indians at the Sunday Feast.
And then later the Temples settle down. Since Indians, often rich, support everything, why go out and invite local people?
Iskcon, in the West, became a movement of the Indian diaspora.
What would Srila Prabhupada's reaction be?
In 2023, India distributed 7 million books. The USA 800 thousand. A big difference. Furthermore, many of these books distributed in the USA are for Indians.
Iskcon became a Hindu movement.
And in places and countries that do not have a rich and numerous Indian congregation and there is also no distribution of books and invitations during the week, the Sunday Feasts have no one. They are dead and lifeless. A half dozen people.
