Srila Prabhupada Siddha Svarupa

  • Prahladesh Dasa Adhikari Q. I have heard that Prabhupada is in sakhya rasa like Subala sakha. Did he say this, or is this just an opinion? And if this is true, does this create difficulty for his disciples who are in madhurya rasa?
    A. by HH Tripurari Swami: This is an opinion, not an unreasonable one. Sridhara Maharaja felt that Prabhupada had affinity for sakhya rasa, either owing to this being his actual sentiment, or out of deference to Nityananda prabhu who had empowered him. In consideration of the latter, he may have veiled his madhurya sentiment.
Some of his disciples may have the vision that his is a follower of Subala. If the guru is in manjari bhava, he can also give sakhya bhava, and thus could be perceived by different disciples as representing different potencies of Krsna.
If your guru is in sakhya rasa, this is not a problem. It is difficult to find a guru with affinity for any rasa these days. Sakhya rasa is very compatible with madhurya, especially Subala's love.
Subala is a priya narma sakha. It is a mixture of friendship and conjugal love. With emphasis on the conjugal side of it. Rupa Goswami calls Subala's love “sakhi bhava.” While the manjaris are tendering to Radha in her plight of separation, Subala and others are consoling Krsna in his separation from Radha. We find in Caitanya Caritamrita that Mahaprabhu was sometimes consoled by Ramamanda Ray, just as Subala consoled Krsna in the Vraja lila.
A siddha guru situated in the sakhi bhava of Subala, that by its nature is not competitive with Radha, is a very capable guide for one who will find his eternal service in manjari bhava for Radha, although he may turn this disciple to siksa guru of manjari bhava in the long run.

  • Prahladesh Dasa Adhikari Letter to Upendra -- Los Angeles 13 November, 1968: Your question, "When one has become pure enough, Krishna conscious, does one take regular dictation from one's Guru Maharaja? I know you to confirm yes, but how is this so? Understanding that each individual has a certain particular rasa with Krishna, how would one relate with another soul of a different rasa? Especially between that of the Guru and disciple?" That doesn't matter. The Spiritual Master's position is to train the disciples. Just like a teacher, he may be a very expert mathematician, but in the lower class he is teaching English. The Spiritual Master's duty is to train him, but when he comes to the perfectional stage of training, then he realizes his position. That is not a gift of the Spiritual Master, the Spiritual Master helps him to realize his relationship with the Lord. Just like the student in lower stages has to study so many things as preliminary education, English, history, math, etc., but in higher stage of education, he has got a particular taste for a special subject, so he specializes as a mathematician or a historian, etc. So that special qualification reveals in the higher stage.

Who says it is only Madhurya Rasa?
"Vrajanatha: Which type of raganuga-bhakti do we have the adhikara to adopt?
Babaji: My son, you should scrutinize your own nature, and then you will see the corresponding type of devotion for which you are qualified. A particular ruci will awaken according to your inherent nature, and you should pursue the rasa that is indicated by that ruci. In order to cultivate that rasa, you should follow one of Krsna’s eternal associates who is perfect in it. To determine rasa, it is only necessary to examine your own ruci. If your ruci is towards the path of raga, then you should act according to that ruci; and as long as inclination has not awakened for the path of raga, you should simply execute the principles of vaidhi-bhakti with firm faith.
Vijaya: Prabhu, I have been studying Srimad-Bhagavatam for a long time, and I listen to krsna-lila whenever and wherever I find the opportunity. Whenever I deliberate on krsna-lila, a strong bhava arises within my heart to serve the Divine Couple as Lalita-devi does.
Babaji: You need not say any more. You are a manjari (young maidservant) of Lalita-devi. Which service do you like?
Vijaya: I desire that Srimati Lalita-devi should grant me permission to string garlands of flowers. I shall string lovely garlands of beautiful delicate flowers, and place them in Lalita Sakhi’s lotus hands. She will look upon me with an infinitely merciful, love laden glance, and then she will place the garlands around the necks of Sri Sri Radha and Krsna.
Babaji: I give you my blessings that you may attain perfection in the goal for which you are undertaking your sadhana. When Vijaya heard Babaji Mahasaya’s affectionate benediction, he fell at the lotus feet of his preceptor and wept. Seeing his emotional state, Babaji said, “Go on continually practicing raganuga-sadhana-bhakti with this same feeling, and externally follow the conduct laid down according to the rules of vaidhisadhana-bhakti, in a regular way.”
When Vrajanatha saw Vijaya Kumara’s spiritual wealth, he folded his hands and humbly said, “My master, whenever I meditate on Sri Krsna’s pastimes, a desire arises in my heart to serve Him by following in the footsteps of Subala.”
Babaji: Which service do you like?
Vrajanatha: When the calves wander far off to graze, I would very much like to bring them back in the company of Subala. When Krsna sits in a place to play upon His flute, I will take the permission of Subala to let the cows drink water, and then I will bring them to Bhai (Brother) Krsna. This is my heart’s desire.
Babaji: I give you the benediction that you will attain Krsna’s service as a follower of Subala. You are eligible to cultivate the sentiment of friendship (sakhya-rasa).
It is wonderful that from that day on, within Vijaya Kumara’s mind, the feeling began to sprout that he was a maidservant (dasi) of Srimati Lalita-devi, and he began to look upon Srila Babaji Maharaja as the personification of Sri Lalita-devi.
AND.....from that day on, Vrajanatha began to look upon Babaji as the personification of Subala." (Chapter 21 – Raganuga-Sadhana-Bhakti)
"Rāgānuga-bhakti, or spontaneous devotional service, can be executed in the śānta-rasa when one aspires to be like Kṛṣṇa's cows or the stick or flute in the hand of Kṛṣṇa, or the flowers around Kṛṣṇa's neck.
In the dāsya-rasa one follows in the footsteps of servants like Citraka, Patraka or Raktaka.
In the friendly sakhya-rasa one can become a friend like Baladeva, Śrīdāmā or Sudāmā.
In the vātsalya-rasa, characterized by parental affection, one can become like Nanda Mahārāja and Yaśodā,
and in the mādhurya-rasa, characterized by conjugal love, one can become like Śrīmatī Rādhārāṇī or Her lady friends such as Lalitā and Her serving maids (mañjarīs) like Rūpa and Rati.
This is the essence of all instruction in the matter of devotional service." [Srila Prabhupada - The Nectar of Instruction 8]
"Special natural appreciation of the description of a particular pastime of Godhead indicates the constitutional position of a living entity." (Srila Prabhupada - Cc Adi 4.34p)
So after the devotee find which Rasa he/she has attraction and aspiration, should cultivate it. If you are attracted by Dasya Rasa, should cultivate it. If you are attracted by Sakhya Rasa, should cultivate it. If you are attracted by Vatsalya Rasa, should cultivate it. If you are attracted by Madhurya Rasa, should cultivate it.
And of course we have to defeat the atheists. Establish scientific understanding of God and the necessity of His devotional service through authoritative scriptures like Bhagavad-gita.
AND at same time cultivate our especific relationship with Sri Sri Radha Krsna or Sri Sri Sita Rama or .......but we have to specify.
One should not impose a particular Rasa at the expense of others. That everyone should necessarily be in Madhurya Rasa. NOT.
Nor is imposing the system of Siddha Pranali.
What is emphasized is that there should be a separate effort and practice to cultivate the specific relationship of each devotee.
What in many cases is neglected by many in Iskcon.
An example. Some say, quoting Prabhupada, you should chant Hare Krsna and simply listen to the sound of the Maha Mantra. But it is at the beginning. And the devotees are chanting almost four 4 DECADES now. We're not talking about beginners.
Prabhupada explains how chanting cultivating Raganuga Sadhana Bhakti:
"The Hare Krishna mantra chanting means keeping Krishna always within your heart. It is not expensive at all. You haven't got to make a very exalted throne for Krishna. You can imagine that "In my heart I have placed a diamond throne, and Krishna is sitting." That is accepted and actually it becomes. Even within the mind, you think that "I have kept one diamond throne, very costly throne. Because Krishna is coming, He will sit down here." That is not false; that is fact.
"So you create such a situation in your heart, "Now Krishna has seated. Let me wash His feet with Ganges water or Yamuna water. Now I change His dress to first-class costly garments. then I decorate Krishna with ornaments. Then I give Him something for eating." You can simply think of this. This is meditation. It is such a nice thing. Anywhere you can sit down, and think that Krishna is sitting in your heart and you are receiving Him in such a nice way. This is not false; this fact; this is easy." (Srila Prabhupada talk (1/6/74))
But many overlook this saying is Sahajya.
